Water Resources Design Principles

Development of sector-wide Design Principles for the water industry as they develop their Strategic (Water) Resource Options (SROs) projects to address extreme water scarcity in the South East of England.

Working for the All Company Working Group (ACWG) of Water Companies, this work developed core design principles for the numerous Water Resource projects (Reservoirs, Pipelines and Plant) currently being developed by different organizations across the country. The document offers guidance on how principles of a good design process should be applied throughout the project lifecycle to achieve the best design outcomes for the companies and communities.

The development of the principles was led by Fereday Pollard working with LDA Design and support from Design Council Cabe whose panel of experts offered strategic insight and review throughout. Looking at current policy, international best practice and emerging precedents, the team developed the principles to build on the structure of the NIC Design Principles – Climate, People, Place and Value.

The User Guidance proposes a process broadly based on the phases of a project lifecycle and is focused on the areas that will “raise the bar” above “business as usual” infrastructure design and drive value through the design and delivery processes. This is primarily through the development design leadership skills and thorough and thoughtful Project Specific Visions and Design Principles.
